Thursday Night's Southern California High School Football Scores - Week 3

By Jeff Fisher

Thanks to USC quarterback Matt Barkley’s outstanding high school career at Mater Dei, I knew quite a bit about the Monarchs from a far, thanks to their appearances on national television.  What I didn’t know before moving here is the Santa Ana school has had some slow starts out of the gate over the past five years.

Last night, the Monarchs, ranked #13 in this week’s High School Football America – SoCal Top 20, dominated Santa Monica 51-0 to improve to 3-0, which is the team’s best start since 2007.

JSerra, the other Trinity League school in action Thursday night, also improved to 3-0 with an impressive come from behind 15-14 win over previously undefeated Buena Park (2-1).  The Coyotes actually held a 14-0 lead in the third quarter.

One other game of note last night saw Paraclete (3-1), the #2 team in the High School Football America – SoCal Small Schools Top 5, surprised Dorsey (2-1) 26-24.  According to a story in the LA Times, Paraclete withstood a furious comeback by the Dons after taking a 26-12 led with eight minutes to go in the game.

Be sure to tune-in to High School Football America – SoCal on Saturday night.  This week’s show will start at 10:30 P.M. right after the Dodgers game on KLAC AM 570 Fox Sports LA.  The show runs until midnight.

Centennial Wins SoCal Battle Against Mater Dei

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

It wasn't the track meet like last year, but Friday night's game between Southern California powers Centennial (Corona, CA) and Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) didn't disappoint those that like offense.

The two team combined for 966 yards in total offense, and when the dust cleared, Centennial (#16 USA Today Super 25) stood the victor 47-35. The Huskies victory avenged last year's defeat to Mater Dei 51-37 when the two teams combined for 1,300 yards in total offense.

Mater Dei entered the game ranked #2 in California, while Centennial was #4.

Mater Dei Survives in 3 OT Battle With Carson on ESPN 2

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

It took three overtimes, but 2007 Gatorade National Player of the Year Matt Barkley and his Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) teammates were finally able to shake Carson 46-43 in a game that was nationally televised on ESPN 2 Wednesday night.

Barkley, who looked good-and-bad at times, tossed six touchdown passes to go along with four interceptions, including one in the second scoreless overtime for the Monarchs, who entered the game ranked #29 in the ESPN Rise Fab 50. Barkley, who has verbally committed to USC, ended the game 15-of-31 for 301 yards. His top receiver was senior Ario Winston who caught six balls for 143 yards and three touchdowns.
